当眼睛过干时，身体会做出反应，泪腺会分泌无菌但缺乏营养的泪液，形成反射性泪液分泌。例如，当眼睛受到刺激时，比如辣椒喷雾，也会引起反射性泪液分泌。
 

这种水分含量过高的泪液可以在短时间内将刺激物冲掉，但对视力或者角膜的健康没有帮助。泪腺还会产生情感性泪液，比如哭泣难过。
